The other morning, I cooked myself a small pot of grits. Usually, when I fix grits, I will use dairy butter to season them. I have been putting dairy butter on my grits, forever! However, I hesitated to put dairy butter on my grits this morning.
Having heart disease and being diabetic, I know dairy butter is not good for me. It would benefit me not to eat it, but it is so tasty on grits, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, toast, etc. Dairy butter is everything!
I have heard dairy butter is high in saturated fat and that plant-based butter is lower in saturated fat. Plant-based butter isn’t rancid for my cholesterol; it is supposed to be more heart-healthy. Dairy butter has vitamin D and calcium, which are very important, but dairy butter can increase your cholesterol levels both bad and good. I don’t have any statistics; it’s just what I’ve heard through the years.
I am trying to eat differently, and it’s challenging because I crave all the foods that are not right for me, like butter. I’ve tasted plant-based butter, and it’s okay, but there’s nothing like dairy butter.
So what do I do follow my taste buds or follow my heart. I think I will follow my HEART!
