My Journey With Eating Meat

I had a craving a couple of weeks ago for the chicken bowl meal at Chipotle, usually, I get the Chipotle veggie bowl. On this day, the chicken bowl meal with black beans, fajita veggies, brown rice, cheese, and guacamole was ordered. I know I decided to stop eating meat, but I think I am going to hold off on the chicken.

When I watched a couple of documentaries several months back about the meat industry, I heard and saw things that disgusted me. I had watched these documentaries before, but this time, the information from the documentaries I watched on YouTube bothered me.

That’s when I decided to stop eating beef, pork, and salmon. I wish I could say the decision I made was not difficult, but it has been. I’ve been eating meat for over 60 years. I love the taste of barbecued chicken, baked salmon with lemon black pepper, pork chops with gravy and rice, and beef hamburgers with cheese and pickles on a warm bun.

Funny strange how I ate a plate of baked ziti with meat my youngest daughter cooked last week. I ate the baked ziti as if the last several months without beef meant nothing. I was extremely disappointed with myself; I should have been more secure with my decision to delete beef from my diet, but what was done, I guess was done. Hopefully, the next time I am given a plate of baked ziti with meat I will be able to stand up to the temptation it will present.

Those documentaries I watched served up information that made me think about eating meat and my type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Not sure if eating meat could be a factor with my depression, probably not.

Even though I am still holding onto chicken, I think the choice to delete the other meats from my diet was a good one. My gastro issues are less of an issue and I think my bowels are healthier.

As far as my diabetes is concerned I believe changing the way I eat has been beneficial for my blood sugars. My numbers have been so good that I picked up another blood monitoring device to make sure the device I was using wasn’t broken.

One would probably think since the information about the meat industry was so compelling, the decision to eat or not eat meat should be simple, but it’s not!
