Low Blood Pressure and Metoprolol

β€”

I’ve been having issues with my blood pressure being low for several months. Within the last couple of months, when checking my blood pressure, my systolic (top) number has been under 100, and my diastolic (bottom) number has been under 64.

I was getting lightheaded. Was it due to a medication I was taking? When I reiterated my concerns to my cardiologist, he thought Metoprolol (my heart medication) was the culprit since it has been known to decrease blood pressure.

I went from 100 mg of Metoprolol to 50mg, but my blood pressure continued to be low. One morning, when I checked my blood- pressure, it was 76/48. I was so lightheaded that I had to grab the wall when I got up.

I have been on Metoprolol since 2016, so what’s going on? Was it really the Metoprolol? I had my doubts. Anyway, my cardiologist took me off the Metoprolol, and soon after, my heart rate increased. A couple of days after that, my heart- rate was still elevated, so he put me on 25mg of Metoprolol. Well, it has been almost two weeks, and I’m still taking 25mg of Metoprolol. My heart rate has decreased, and my blood pressure is not as low as it had been. So, metoprolol could have been responsible for my low blood pressure, but now I am palpitating a little. Go figure.

Until the next blog, be blessed.

  1. We have Metolar here and recently, it caused me a first degree heart block, after which the doctor discontinued it. I cannot take it and now struggle with palpitations daily.
